Welcome to my world, where it is all about food! I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Recipe developer, Former Academic, Researcher and a genuine food enthusiast.

 

Childhood memories are of me coming home from school, throwing my book bag aside and heading to the kitchen to determine the next recipe experiment. I quickly learned family recipes, regional specialties and international favorites. I was fortunate to be able to learn from my parents, who were both fabulous at cooking. But it was from my late father, a dairy scientist, that I inherited the passion for food in a more abiding and professional way.

 

Like most other children of well educated families of India, I was encouraged by some to consider a popular professional field such as Medicine. However, I decided to pursue Food science and Nutrition as that allowed me to stay close to my interests. Then I moved to the US for university education. I obtained a doctorate in Foods and Nutrition from Purdue university and followed that with working as a post doctoral research scientist at Columbia university.

 

Exposure to a rainbow of cultures in the US, surely helped me increase my repertoire of recipes. Then the next thing that happened in my life, ensured that culinary adventures would remain a lifelong obsession. I got married into a family of German and Persian heritage. I was introduced to two diverse and fabulous cuisines at once. I learned from my in laws who are fantastic cooks, books and sometimes self taught through a variety of resources.

 

At the university I got a chance to teach several courses on Foods, Nutrition, Food service management, Nutrition education, Food sciences, Advanced nutrition and many more. In particular I taught a course – Food and Culture – which provided insight into the food practices and cultural influences of various countries. Teaching all these courses further honed my flair.

 

While working in the healthcare industry, I came across a plethora of misinformation about nutrition, self appointed experts, countless number of people struggling with eating nutritious food and staying healthy. The number of people who are either overweight or obese is always on the rise. People are succumbing to diabetes, heart ailments and other conditions that can be managed or prevented with lifestyle changes. Too many people are out there to take a business advantage of the situation without having enough scientific knowledge to help people overcome challenges stemming out of unhealthy eating practices.

 

Hence I decided to utilize my training, education, interests and experiences to make a contribution. And I am so delighted to be able to share with you about the health benefits of foods, delicious and nutritious recipes, diet/lifestyle modifications and nutrition tips.

 

I firmly believe in moderation while eating and in an active lifestyle. And I do have a sweet tooth and thoroughly relish baking. Food is one of the great pleasures of life. So indulging once in a while is perfectly okay.
